VLCD - an effective method of body weight loss and control, most frequently referred to in scientific literature

Nutritious products of low calorie diets (known as VLCD or LCD products) enriched with vitamins and minerals, are a very effective weapon against overweight. On average, over the first 4-6 weeks, 2 kg are lost weekly. Over the next stage, namely 6 months, weight loss slows down to a kilogram per week.

The history of low-energy diets (VLCD) dates back to 1929 when Evans and Strang published the results of applied diets, which were very much similar to the current weight loss programs.

Diets were composed of products which did not exceed 400 kcal and aimed at rapid weight loss. The formula was also low GI by todays standards. In case of obese patients, it was not the amount of food that was reduced down but the amount of calories, which allowed for a rapid weight loss. Having treated hundreds of patients, the originators of the research confirmed that such a diet allowed for a safe and effective weight loss.

In 70’s, VLCD diet was re-launched; this time by Blackburn i Mclean and again appeared to be a great success. Research results were of great interest on the commercial market, mainly in the United States. Hydrolysed collagen was used in mass production as the only source of protein, nevertheless the “liquid protein diet” failed to include sufficient amount of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes, which had a negative impact on the opinion about VLCD diets that for many years were wrongly perceived as unhealthy.

Nevertheless, many widely available fully nutritious VLCD diets appeared to be a real success and using them, millions of people around the world managed to reduce their weight and get rid of hundreds of tons of excessive kilograms.

The majority of programs intended for weight reduction and control draw from VLCD diets and combine them with other therapies such as behavioural therapy and coaching on nutrition.

The intention is to achieve the best possible results: weight is rapidly lost during the first stage when a patient is on VLCD diet and then the indirect therapies help to ensure long-term weight control.

Over recent years, the amount of calories of low energy diets such as VLCD and LCD changed. Before, VLCD diet that provided only 250 kcal or even less per day was of main interest.

After regulations and standards of global scope have been recently introduced by FDA in the United States and by the European Union with regards to such products, they are classified as follows:

  • VLCD products, substitutes of a daily diet providing 800 kcal per day
  • LCD products providing 800 to 1200 kcal per day
  • substitutes of meals - products providing 200 up to 400 kcal per portion

VLCD diet allows for a rapid weight loss over the first stage without causing a risk to protein and electrolyte balance, which is often hindered during fasting. Rapid results motivate to carry on the undertaken weight loss program.

The effectiveness of this weight loss and control method made it a widely and most frequently described method in scientific literature.

Clinical studies prove that significant weight loss achieved e.g. due to a bariatric surgery may help normalise tolerance to glucose and insulin.

The latest studies show that weight loss of 15 kg or more may considerably reduce or even eliminate the risk of the most dangerous complications being the result of obesity and may prolong and even double life expectancy.

Despite the many achievements in medicine and the available scientifically proven weight control programs, only 5% of patients suffering from diabetes manage to achieve and maintain such a result.

The main reason for such a small percentage is firstly, lack of education about the risks caused by obesity and diabetes and secondly, abandoning a patient after weight loss program has ended up.

15 kg might be lost over 8 weeks of being on a very low-energy diet. Blood glucose level improves and gets normalised already after the first 2 weeks (Metaanaliza Anderson et al.).

Regular visits at medical specialist and long-term control, coaching on diets and healthy lifestyle may significantly contribute to maintaining the results achieved by patients suffering from diabetes.
