Why are most diets ineffective?

Each food has a specific amount of energy expressed in kJ or kcal. Even when we don’t move, our body uses energy from food in order to maintain body temperature, brain activity and other biological functions. It's widely believed that if the energy obtained from food is greater than the one burnt by the body, our fatty tissue starts to grow and we gain weight.

It’s far from true, though, as there are people who consume 3000 kcal per day but remain slim for years, while others eat only 2000 kcal daily and already struggle with constant overweight, even though they are often physically active. Needless to say, different people have a radically different ability to burn energy, depending on their individual metabolic processes. These individual differences show that in order to lose weight we need not only to limit our energy intake, but also to boost metabolism.

Unfortunately, most popular weight-loss diets produce an unintended defensive reaction of the body.

Metabolism slows down to protect the valuable energy reserves, fat. Understanding this reaction is vital to explaining why weeks of low-calorie diets often don’t bring the expected results.

How to boost metabolism?

 Any low-calorie diet with carbs is a signal for the body to protect the fat reserves. The body slows down metabolism against our will, behaving just like an animal going into hibernation. Hormonal changes are an additional obstacle. The level of leptin, the satiety hormone, falls and the level of ghrelin, the hunger hormone, rises. A prolonged exposure to this state may lead to the yo-yo effect after the diet.

Nutrition clinic specialists have long tried to create a diet that would solve this problem. A major breakthrough happened when the influence of carbs on dieting was discovered. A comparative study on big groups of female and male patients demonstrated a considerably higher effectiveness of VLCKD (Very-Low Calorie Ketogenic Diet) in comparison with diets with identical energy value but including carbohydrates. It turned out that only fats, preferably MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides), can boost metabolism on very-low calorie diets.

What is ketosis?

 Lack or very low intake of carbs causes a drop of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. Glycogen (another form of glucose), stored in the muscles and liver, takes on the role of glucose and provides energy for all human organs until its reserves are exhausted. Depending on the level of physical activity of a dieter, glycogen and the tiny amount of carbs provided in VLCKD are used up after 2-3 days. The pancreas stops producing insulin, necessary to transport glucose, and in the meantime the liver is forced to use triglycerides from the fatty tissue to maintain body functions. Triglycerides, a type of fatty acids, are converted into ketone bodies. Ketones enter the bloodstream and take on the functions of the vanishing glucose, continuously providing energy for the brain, muscles and other organs. When the body uses more energy from the ketone bodies than from glucose, it enters the state of ketosis. It used to be common for humans in the prehistoric times and it still is… for breastfed babies. In ketosis the energy source shifts from low-energy glucose with 4 kcal/g to high-energy fat, 9 kcal/g, that cannot be used by parasites, bacteria or neoplastic cells.

The phenomenon of VLCKD

In recent years many studies and articles related to the topic have been published. They demonstrate that the most effective form of treating obesity with VLCKD (500-800 kcal/day) is combining MCT fats with highly-absorbable proteins.

MCT fats are metabolized directly in the liver, without the use of bile, necessary for the digestion of other fats. Thanks to this property MCTs provide quick and concentrated energy of higher quality than the one of carbs. Quick energy is necessary for proper digestion and absorption of highly thermogenic proteins (it’s best to use whey protein concentrate WPC-80 or green pea protein for vegans). The process of protein synthesis is necessary to minimize the loss of FFM (Fat-Free Mass), or, in other words, to protect the muscle tissue.

On the 2nd-3rd day of the diet the concentration of ketone bodies in the blood suddenly rises. Ketones are then responsible for the fall in the level of ghrelin, the hunger hormone, also known as the regulator of appetite.

The phenomenon of VLCKD shows that it’s possible to combine very low calorie intake with boosting metabolism to achieve rapid fatty tissue reduction and muscle protection, plus reduce the feeling of hunger. Health specialists recommended treating obesity with VLCKD. We followed their advice and created a diet that you can do at home to lose up to 10% of body mass in 10 days.

How to lose weight fast and safely?

Fast and safe weight-loss process should take a couple of days and enable reducing as much fat as possible but with only a minimal loss of the muscle tissue and without dehydration. VLCKD meets these requirements, because you can lose 7-10% of body weight in 5-10 days.

In a keto diet with reduced calorie intake it’s recommended to increase the proportion of proteins to 25-30%. According to a new EU directive the protein intake should amount to 30-35%. We call this type of diet thermo-ketogenic. 50-75 g of protein daily fully covers the deficit of the burnt muscle tissue.

When you follow a VLCKD you need to increase the amount of consumed water to 2-2.5 litre daily, especially in the first 2 days. In this period the body eliminates the aqueous solution of glycogen that includes about 500 g of pure glycogen and 1.5 l of water. When you have completed the diet and stopped ketosis you may gain 1-2 kg due to the recreated glycogen. It’s advisable to supplement the diet with minerals that increase the absorption of water by the body.
